combating covid-19 in michigan

COVID-19 has created extraordinary challenges for Michiganders over the past two years, and unfortunately, people are still suffering. Notably, COVID-19 has disproportionally threatened our elderly population and individuals with existing medical conditions. Steps must continue to be taken to reduce their risk.

With no end in sight, Thomas believes it is vitally important to ensure that all available treatments are utilized. Treatments such as monoclonal antibodies have proven to drastically reduce the likeliness of hospitalization and death. Thomas feels strongly that anyone suffering from COVID-19 should have access to these treatments. That is why as Appropriations Chair, Thomas introduced a Covid-response plan aimed at expanding early treatments in Michigan. The House-passed plan dedicated federal funds to accomplish the following:

  • Create state-established testing and treatment sites across the state

  • Purchase additional monoclonal antibodies and other treatments as they are approved

  • Improve patient safety and care in nursing homes and long-term care facilities

  • Expand access to at-home care for elderly and at-risk individuals

  • Address critical staffing shortages in our healthcare system

  • Ensure COVID tests are readily available for all schools, public and private, to keep students learning in the classroom

  • Distribute voluntary COVID-19 vaccinations

The health and safety of 18th District residents is a top priority for Thomas. In the Michigan Senate, he will continue to advocate for help where it’s needed most.
